EU REACH legislation expected to catch the unwary & unready

New legislation on the Registration, Evaluation & Authorisation of Chemicals is now in force across the EU. The aim of this piece of legislation is to minimise the impact of chemical substances on health & the environment, while still allowing sustainable development within the EU. Anyone who manufactures, imports or uses chemical substances that have not already been submitted for Registration by the regulators, is breaking the law and could face a major fine or imprisonment.
Research by a major global consultancy has found that awareness of responsibilities under REACH is very poor outside the chemical industry and that expert advice is in short supply for those affected. Organisations are especially confused by the reference to "chemicals" because the new regulations apply to anything, including pure metals, cleaning products, textiles and printed packaging.
Organisations urgently need to assess whether they have responsibilities under REACH or whether a strategic material may be withdrawn or become too expensive to use, because of the cost of compliance to their supplier.
