Zero Tolerance from Regulators on Packaging Waste Regulations

The Packaging Waste Regulations, more properly known as the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007, have been in force in more or less the same form  since 1997. Any organisation that meets threshold criteria for handling packaging materials, must register as a Waste Producer and accept responsibility for recycling packaging waste.

It's very common that organisations underestimate the amount of packaging that they handle & we still come across companies that have obligations under the regulations, but simply haven't realised it.  The Environment Agency have a campaign running to identify organisations that have, previously, carried on un-noticed and have a zero tolerance to those that they identify.  Fines and costs are currently running at around £6,000 for each year that an organisation has failed to register.
